What is USI (Unique Student Identifier)?

What is the meaning of USI?

USI stands for Unique Student Identifier.

What is a USI number in Australia?

Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a unique number issued by the USI Registry (usi.gov.au) to every student in Australia. The USI is used as a common identifier for each student, and it can be thought of as a sort of digital passport or Social Security Number.

The USI is supported by Commonwealth legislation, the Student Identifiers Act 2014.

When applying for any accredited training in Australia, you will need your Unique Student Identifier because it is required by law that all registered providers collect this information from students before issuing a statement of attainment, qualification, or award. The USI will stay with you for life and will be recorded with any nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training course undertaken from January 2015.

Australian education or training providers must report to the national VET collections yearly. Every training recipient is assigned a USI, which connects their various training records from different institutions, states, and years. Your USI links to an online account that contains all your training records and results (transcript) completed from 1 January 2015 onwards.

When applying for a job or enrolling in further study, you will often need to provide your training records and results (transcript). One of the main benefits of the USI is the ability to provide students with easy access to their training records and results (transcript) throughout their life.

What is the USI register?

The USI Register is an online database of information provided by students, which is used to create USI.

The USI Registry (usi.gov.au) has created a national register that provides organisations and institutions with statutory requirements under legislation to access student details to meet their reporting obligations using this unique identifier number called the Unique Student Identifier (USI).

The role of the USI Registry (usi.gov.au) includes managing and protecting this unique number so that it doesn't get compromised by cybercriminals.

How do I find my USI number?

If you are an Australian student, the best way to find out your USI is by checking it on the official site - usi.gov.au.

It's important to remember that the same USI will be used across all training providers in Australia to serve as a common identifier for all your records.

What does a Unique Student Identifier look like? What is a USI form?

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is effectively a reference number made up of ten(10) numbers and letters.

Getting a USI is FREE, and it is easy to create and stays with you for life.
